I've had this problem on my laptop occasionally. It's not a similar laptop, so I can't help with the svga problems themselves, but I can suggest a treatment for the symptom: The best solution is to connect to your box remotely using ssh, and start a shutdown. If you're not on a network, what you can do is set up a delayed shutdown with shutdown -r +1 before you start trying things with svga modes. Then, if you find the keyboard locked, you can just wait for the 1 minute to expire, and the machine will shut down and reboot without needing to fsck. And once you actually get svga working properly, you have 1 minute to cancel the shutdown with Ctrl-C.
